Scholar’s Day 2019: What to Expect

This year’s NSHSS Scholar’s Day will take place in Washington, D.C., at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10, 2019. Scholar’s Day offers the opportunity to celebrate the academic excellence of each attendee and brings together NSHSS members, staff members, and fellows from around the world.

Scholar’s Day also presents a chance for attendees to learn more about fellow NSHSS members, gain insight from successful working professionals, glimpse the possibilities of the future, and take advantage of mentorship opportunities.

Read on for answers to some common questions you might have leading up to Scholar's Day 2019 to help you better prepare and make the most out of the event.

What to Wear

Since you will be among fellow scholars, educators, professionals, and mentors at Scholar’s Day, it is important you dress to impress. At a professional event like this, expect to bring professional business and business casual clothing for the daytime events and more formal attire for the College and Career Expo and Member Recognition ceremony.

The way you present yourself should mirror your professionalism and commitment to excellence, so dress the way you would like to be seen as a scholar and professional – and to be ready for any photo ops!

What to Bring

At Scholar’s Day, you will be surrounded by countless inspiring people and stories, so be sure to pack whatever materials you may need for notetaking so you can take a look back at what you’ve learned. Bring your excitement and passion for academics and opportunities to grow.

To take full advantage of the opportunity, though, do not bring devices that will distract you. Try to disconnect from electronics unless using them for taking notes or sharing contact information with newfound friends and potential collaborators. Strive to absorb all the information you can. But if you do post to social media, be sure to tag us at @NSHSS!

If you have a passion project to share within the categories of either STEM and Innovation or World Betterment, make sure you bring all materials with you to share your passion with the rest of the Scholar’s Day attendees. Remember, the deadline to apply to share your passion project at Scholar’s Day is July 26th.

How to Manage Your Time

With so many events back-to-back, the Scholar’s Day schedule might seem overwhelming at first. Just remember: quality is often more important than quantity, especially in this case.

Take each event you attend in stride: absorb as much information as you can and allow yourself to be present with your peers, the speakers and/or your mentors. Events like Scholar’s Day are unique, and soaking up the experience is incredibly important.

While you’re in D.C., you should also consider taking time to visit the monuments, museums, and even the Zoo. The nation’s capital offers so many opportunities to learn more about and enjoy reminders of important events in U.S. history.

How to Network

Networking might sound intimidating, but it is merely a fancy way to describe the process of getting to know new people. Instead of thinking of the conversations you will have as networking, consider them moments of sharing your own passions with others and learning about theirs in return.

Strive for authenticity and professionalism in your interactions, and you will surely meet peers and mentors with whom you have interests in common. When you are brave enough to meet new people and share authentically with them, you will be surprised at the connections you discover and the relationships you forge.
