NSHSS Scholar’s Day 2018 in Atlanta, GA

Approximately 1,500 scholars, parents, and educators from 33 states and 7 countries gathered in Atlanta, Georgia to participate in Scholar’s Day 2018.

This 2-day event kicked off on the afternoon of Friday, November 30, with an exhibit hall featuring 60 College & Career Fair booths, shopping the NSHSS store, and Student Exhibition presentations, highlighting STEM & Innovation and World Betterment projects. On Friday evening, members and parents went their separate ways for specialized programming.

Member sessions included:

  • “Choosing the Best Fit College,” presented by Lida Griest Educational Counseling, and
  • A Mentor Roundtable, with 20 volunteer mentors, providing for NSHSS scholars to connect with professionals on topics associated with career and life advice.

The Welcome Sessions for parents were created specifically with parents and guardians in mind:

  • “College Admissions 101” featured a panel of six university officials and provided parents with an opportunity to ask the difficult questions surrounding the college admissions process.
  • “Scholar’s Day Overview & Maximizing Your NSHSS Membership” was an info session facilitated by NSHSS Fellows Board Members, outlining event opportunities as well as member benefits.

Both members and parents enjoyed receptions after the welcome sessions. While parents were networking with NSHSS educators and leadership, members were having a party. This was an opportunity for scholars to let their hair down, have fun and get to know their fellow members complete with a lip-sync battle, selfie station, games, and more.

Day two began with eight early-morning breakout sessions on Gap Year opportunities, writing college essays, SAT and/or ACT strategy sessions, CIA Student Opportunities panel, and more! Scholar's Day culminated with a general session featuring a Future Focused panel, a Conversation with Dr. Bernice King, and Member Recognition Ceremony. The panelists, a diverse group of professionals from various industries, shared what they are looking for from the next generation workforce and how to build important skills for the transition from academic success to career achievement. The Member Recognition Ceremony honored the 2018 scholarship and award recipients, Student Exhibition winners, top educators, and newly-inducted high-achieving scholars.
