The Lyceum Scholars Program at Clemson University is the first college program in the United States to use a great books approach to studying liberty, capitalism, the American founding, and moral character.

All Lyceum Scholars receive a $10,000 scholarship. The Lyceum Scholars Program is open to students of any major.

About the Lyceum Scholars Program

The Lyceum Scholars Program, first and foremost, studies ideas. By focusing on ideas and the consequences of those ideas, this prestigious program gives Lyceum Scholars the tools to learn how to think rather than what to think. Lyceum Scholars read the greatest works in western civilization over a series of eight classes. Course topics range from ancient political thought to the political thought of the American founding to constitutional law.

Lyceum Scholars have the unique and invaluable opportunity to create meaningful relationships with professors. The Lyceum Scholars Program offers professional and moral mentorship to its students. Professors work with individual Lyceum Scholars to identify the academic and professional opportunities that best fit the student’s immediate interests and long-term aspirations. In doing so, professors offer assistance when Lyceum Scholars apply to summer fellowships or internships, helping students build their resumes, writing samples, personal statements, and interviewing skills. Yet most unique to the Lyceum Scholars Program is the “Socratic Tutor Session,” wherein each Lyceum Scholar meets bi-weekly with a professor to discuss moral character and the ways in which the ideas from the classroom connect to everyday life.
